An alleged car thief jumped into the Watauga River to evade police . officers responded to a motor vehicle theft in the Spruce Lane area. The vehicle a red Ford Escort and the suspect, allegedly armed with a large knife. Elizabethton Officers tracked down Leonard Price, who while surrounded by police jumped into the river at South Riverside he was arrested near the Elks Lodge.
