Todd McKinley has defeated two candidates in the GOP primary for Sullivan County school board District 5. McKinley grabbed 1,265 votes, while 2nd place finisher Zack Smith had 429. Rodney Padgett got 306 votes to finish in third place. Smith now advances to face Independant candidate Randall Jones in August. In Kingsport, a very close race between four school board candidates, and one incumbent finished last. Phillip Marshall finished first in the GOP primary for District 1, with 2,942 votes. Todd Golden was second with 2,555 and Jamie Jackson was third with 2,493. Incumbent Julie Brinker Byers finished 4th, with 2,445 votes. The top three advance to the August general election. No Democrats filed to run in that contest.
