Bridge To Be Named In Honor Of Carter County WW2 Hero

The Carter County Commission highway Committee has unanimously approved the naming of a bridge in honor of World War Two veteran Ira Lynn Meredith. Meredith earned the nation’s second-highest award for heroism in combat when he battleed German machine gun positions right after D Day in 1941. The bridge is along Gap Creek Road near where Meredith is buried. He was killed on June 9th, 1944, after rushing a machine gun nest and killing numerous enemy soldiers.
