You may see and smell smoke since the USDA Forest Service plans to conduct prescribed burns in several Southwest Virginia counties this spring.The burns will take place between March and mid-May in Bland, Grayson, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, and Wythe counties.The Forest Service says prescribed burns improve wildlife habitat by restoring open woodlands and grasslands to the forest landscape. Each burn may take several days to complete.
