Horses In Need Of Medical Attention Put Down, Moved

Two horses are euthanized and seven others moved from Fort Chiswell Stables…this after an investigation by the state’s office of veterinary services. Officials say they got word of the problem over the summer. One mare was thin and had an abnormality on its hips. A second mare was blind. The rest were in better condition but still had problems…mostly concerning malnutrition from illness.

One Fatality In Carroll County Accident

(CARROLL COUNTY) – An Austinville woman dies in a solo crash in Carroll County.

Pamela Alford, 32, died at the scene. She was wearing a seatbelt. Virginia State Police is investigating the crash on Highway 52, north of Route 785.

Investigators say Alford was traveling along 52 when her compact ran off the right side of the road and struck an embankment.

The vehicle then struck a tree and overturned. It came to rest on its roof. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Carter County Fire

Dozens of firefighters were called to the scene of a brush fire, along Highway 19E, just outside of Hampton.

Last word, the blaze is over 90 percent contained, with crews standing by handling flare ups as well. At least 2 acres burned…no homes were in danger.

For a time, a portion of Highway 19E was closed, as ash and other debris was falling on the road. 19E is back open again.

Crews from several communities took on the fire. The cause is under investigation.

Volunteer HS Football Coach Resigns

The head coach of Volunteer High School has stepped down, one day after delivering a profanity-laced speech to his team. Barry Jones had been the target of a number of allegations made by players and parents regarding foul language, abusive behavior and bullying.
Jones tendered his resignation on Friday after meeting with school system administrators, hours before the winless Falcons played Tennessee High. The Falcons stayed winless, losing 41-0.

Construction Timeline Set on Bristol, VA Sessions Hotel Project

Developers of the long-awaited Sessions Hotel in Bristol, VA have finally announced a timetable for constructions and opening.

Construction itself is now scheduled to begin early next year, with a 2019 opening date. The $20M project includes tearing down the former KSS building on State Street, and combining the former Jobbers Candy factory, Service Mills and Owen Equipment buildings.

In addition to a 70-room hotel, the project will also have two restaurants run by chef Travis Milton. One, called Simply Grand, will be casual dining- the other, Shovel & Pick, will be a dinner-only fine dining restaurant. The latter is set to open first by the end of next year- both restaurants are expected to be open by April of 2019.

Greene County Officials Searching For Missing Man

Officials in Greene County are turning to the public for help in finding a missing man. Livewire’s Adam Chappelle has more.

57-year old Richard Keith Walls last talked to family members on Thursday morning, claiming he was at home. Later in the day, he didn’t pick up his paycheck nor his wife, and has not been answering his cell phone. Walls is described as a white male, around 5’9, weighing around 250 pounds with grey hair and brown eyes. He has tattoos on both arms. Anyone with information should call 911 or call the sheriff’s department at (423) 798-1800.

Kingsport’s Borden Park Renovations Finally Complete

Improvements to a Kingsport park are finally done.

Thanks to a community grant from the Tennessee Department of Health, Borden Park received two water refilling stations, a new walking trail and a basketball court.

The city will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Park next Friday, Oct. 6.

One Arrested After Police Chase in Bristol, VA

Police have arrested a North Carolina man after a brief pursuit in Bristol, Virginia Thursday evening.

Police say they stopped a Hyundai Elantra along Euclid Avenue near Park Street. When the car stopped and the responding officer got out of the car, the driver took off.

33-year old Terreal Dorsey wound up leading police on a chase through side streets until it crashed into a concrete wall near St. Anne’s Catholic Church on Euclid Avenue.

GW Bush, Hillary Clinton Campaigning In Va. Governor’s Race

Former President George W. Bush and former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton are raising money for their preferred candidates in the closely watched Virginia governor’s race.

Clinton will be the featured guest at a fundraiser for Democratic Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam in New York on Oct. 4, while Bush is slated to headline a fundraiser for Republican Ed Gillespie on Oct. 16 in Alexandria.

Gillespie was a senior White House adviser during Bush’s presidency. Bush has given $50,000 to Gillespie’s campaign and political action committee.

Northam is facing Gillespie in one of only two off-year gubernatorial contests in November. The swing state contest is viewed as a possible early referendum on President Donald Trump’s first year in office and a preview of the 2018 midterm elections.
