Human Remains Found in Church Hill IDed as Those of Missing Man

Police in Hawkins County have identified the remains of a man who was reported missing more than two years ago.

Human remains were found near Cherry Lane in Church Hill back in November of 2017.

Those remains this week were positively identified as those of Jason Arnold, who was reported missing in December of 2016.

His cause of death could not be determined. Anyone with information on Arnold is asked to call police.

Casino Bill All But Dead in Virginia Until 2020

A Virginia state Senate committee on Wednesday changed a major casino bill to require a study and another vote in 2020 before any casino licenses would be granted.

The Senate Finance Committee agreed with a plan by Republican Majority Leader Tommy Norment of James City to stop any local referendums on casinos until a comprehensive study is done.

The committee voted 12-4 to advance the plan, diminishing hopes of casino supporters as the legislative session approaches the halfway point.

State Sen. Bill Carrico opposed the change, saying there was no reason to delay voter referendums and cited concerns about competition from casino projects moving forward in Kentucky and West Virginia.

Car Plows into Blountville Restaurant, No Injuries Reported

No one was injured after a car crashed into a Blountville restaurant last.

Police say a red Nissan plowed into the Dominos’ Pizza on Highway 394 around 8 o’clock last night.

Fire crews on the scene said no one inside the building was injured- the driver was also suffering from just some minor bumps and bruises.

No word on if any charges will be filed.

Mine Blowout Damages Homes in Buchanan County

A mine blowout damaged homes in Buchanan County on Wednesday.

Officials say the blowout happened in the Elk Creek community, nearly Hurley, around 1230 yesterday afternoon. Water began rushing into a neighborhood and didn’t let up for more than three hours.

The flooding caused damage to a number of homes, and led to the evacuation of one elderly woman.

A county supervisor told NewsChannel11 there have been three major floods in recent years due to mine blowouts and mining pond failures.

The Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals, and Energy is investigating the blowout.

Tennessee Baby Struggling To Survive

A baby in Tennessee is struggling to survive. Karen Johnson reports.

A middle Tennessee 2 month old infant is hospitalized at Vanderbilt University Medical Center with multiple broken bones and severe internal injuries after being physically abused by the baby’s father according to police. 30 year old Michael Fisher is charged with aggravated child abuse and Brooklyn Tidwell, age 27, is charged with aggravated child neglect. An investigation began after the couple brought the baby to Southern Tennessee Medical Center for treatment. Both parents are scheduled to appear in Lawrence County General Sessions court on Feb. 7. SWVA Man Convicted in 2018 Murder of Castlewood Man

A Dante, VA man has been convicted of murder.

69-year old Larry Leon Fields was convicted Tuesday on charges of felony murder, reckless handling of a firearm and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Fields shot and killed 48-year old Mark Ward of Castlewood back in March of last year.

The 69-year old claimed the shooting was an accident, that the two had been “horse-playing” while at work at the Dominion Virginia Power Virginia City Hybrid Energy Center.

He faces up to 65 years in prison.

NC Man Charged in 2015 Carter Co. Standoff in Court

A North Carolina man charged with seven counts of attempted murder in connection with a 2015 incident in Carter County was in court yesterday.

39-year old Kelly Pitts allegedly was involved in a shootout with police in the Stoney Creek Community three years ago that led to two people being shot.

The case is being heard in Washington County at the request of attorneys and is expected to wrap up today.

Missing Tazewell Co. Teens Found Safe in West Virginia

A pair of missing teenage boys from Southwest Virginia have been located safe and sound in West Virginia.
The Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office says Ricky Harrison and Dakota Crouse were located near Bluewell, in Mercer County earlier this week.

The pair had been reported missing since Thursday. The sheriff’s office has not released any other information.

Man Wanted in Washington Co. Murder Arrested Near Knoxville

A man wanted in connection to a Washington County, TN murder has been arrested following a standoff near Knoxville.

Brandon Miller was arrested Tuesday in Seymour, about 12 miles southeast of Knoxville.

Miller had been wanted in connection to fatal shooting on Cash Hollow Road back on January 16.

Police went to arrest Miller, but he was able to escape and hole himself up inside a home in Seymour, leading to the standoff.

Lee County Hospital Will Re-open

Lee County Hospital is reopening. LW’s Karen Johnson.

Lee County Hospital Authority voted Tuesday night to partner with Ballad Health to reopen the county’s hospital. That’s according to a Lee County Hospital Authority commissioner who tells News Channel 11 the authority voted to accept an offer by Ballad Health to open the hospital.He also says the authority also voted to end its previous contractual agreement with another company called Americore. That contract will terminate February 1st. No word yet on a reopening date. I’m Karen Johnson.
