UVA-Wise Asking State Leaders to Add ARC Region to Reduced Tuition Plan

Officials at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise plan to ask state lawmakers this month to amend the State Code of Virginia.

The university is asking the state to expand its reduced tuition program to the entire area that falls within the Appalachian Regional Commission. That region covers 13 states, from New York to Mississippi. But current state law only allows UVA-Wise to give reduced tuition to students in certain Kentucky and Tennessee counties within 50 miles of campus.

Sim Ewing, the college’s vice chancellor for finance and administration, told the Times-News just 50 new students from the ARC region would bring in $1 million in tuition, fees, and room and board to the college on an annual basis.
